Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Road Tax Collection.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

85 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment when this country will commence collection of the new EU road tax on foreign lorries carrying goods to and from this country; the estimated annual income from this tax; and the arrangements, if any, that will be put in place to give effect to the collection of this tax. [1751/95]

No new EU road tax on foreign lorries carrying goods to and from this country has been imposed under EU Directive 93/89/EEC of 25 October, 1993. The directive establishes minimum rates of road tax for certain categories of goods vehicles to be applied in each member state; as the relevant Irish rates are in excess of these minimum amounts, no action is called for on our part.

The directive also relates to road-user charges which may be imposed by EU member states. No such charges have been introduced here.
