Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU-Funded Sewerage Schemes.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

88 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the progress, if any, that is being made in securing funds from EU sources for village and small town sewerage schemes as announced on 28 April 1994. [1758/95]

I intend that small water and sewerage schemes, as well as group schemes, should be supported as an important component of the water services programme and, where possible, that EU assistance will be secured for this purpose.

A new measure on group schemes has been included in the operational programme for environmental services. Measures aimed at improving water supply and sewerage infrastructure in towns and villages will be included in the operational programmes for INTERREG II and for local urban and rural development; these programmes will be finalised shortly.

While the Cohesion Fund is directed principally at larger projects, smaller water and sewerage projects have occasionally been assisted as elements of aggregated schemes. This Cohesion Fund assistance will continue to be sought, where appropriate.
