Vol. 448 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Insurance Fund.

Joe Walsh

Question:

161 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the estimated surplus in the social insurance fund at the beginning of January 1995; and the estimated expenditure on social insurance payments for 1995 on a pre-budget basis. [2151/95]

In 1995, the pre-budget estimate of expenditure on social insurance payments is £1,759 million. This is £40 million lower than the pre-budget estimate of income, giving rise to a surplus of £40 million at this stage.

The surplus is only temporary, however, as the estimates do not provide for expenditure that will arise in the 1995 budget.

In 1994, expenditure of the Social Insurance Fund exceeded its income to the extent that the Exchequer provided a subvention of £47.8 million.
