Vol. 448 No. 3

Written Answers. - Benefits System.

Michael McDowell

Question:

37 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to introduce measures which would streamline and simplify the entire benefits system which is currently causing hardship to people with disabilities. [2002/95]

I would be concerned that persons with disabilities are experiencing hardship in drawing their entitlements.

If the Deputy is aware of specific instances where unnecessary hardship is being occasioned by the operation of the benefits system, I suggest that he communicate the details to the appropriate Minister.

As far as my responsibilities are concerned, I can say that the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities are reviewing the position about the income support system. I look forward to studying the Commission's conclusions and recommendations in their report.
