Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Colleges of Education.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

177 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education the provision, if any, that exists in the colleges of education, all of which are denominational, for teachers who subscribe to no faith. [2805/95]

The colleges of education train those who wish to pursue a career as teachers in primary schools. The programme followed is designed to prepare trainees for teaching the entire curriculum, including religion, in those schools. Accordingly, satisfactory completion of courses on the teaching of religion is an obligatory part of the programme in the colleges of education. The religion of those participating in those courses is irrelevant.
