196 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Social Welfare the amount of money provided by way of subsidy by his Department of CIE for free travel. [2564/95]
My Department does not pay a subsidy to CIE. However, the CIE group of companies, i.e. Bus Atha Cliath, Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann, along with a number of private bus and ferry operators, act as agents for the Department in the operation of the free travel scheme. CIE was paid a total of £28,566,000 in 1994 by the Department for providing bus and rail services to its free travel pass holders.
