Vol. 448 No. 8

Written Answers. - Export Credit Facilities.

Michael Woods

Question:

17 Dr. Woods asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the proposals, if any, he has to make export credit facilities available to Irish exporters. [2925/95]

A State export credit insurance scheme has been in operation for several years. Between 1971 and 1991 the scheme was administered by the Insurance Corporation of Ireland, as agent of the Minister, though there was close liaison between the Department and the company, with some decisions requiring ministerial approval.

At the end of 1991, the State scheme was restructured and since then the new scheme has been administered directly by my Department without the use of an agent. Cover is provided for short term political risk and medium-term commercial and political risk. Shortterm commercial risk cover, provided by the State up to the end of 1991, must now be obtained from the private sector. I have arranged for a copy of the current handout on the State scheme to be sent to the Deputy.
