Vol. 448 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Galway School Transport.

Noel Treacy

Question:

49 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education if she will provide full transport to a school (details supplied) in County Galway; the reasons that this service has been discontinued; the date on which it will be restored; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2964/95]

A transport service to a national school may be retained only where there is a sufficient number of eligible children living in a distinct locality and offering for transport to their nearest national school.

The service to which the Deputy refers was withdrawn in 1993 when it was found that there was only one eligible child involved. This child became ineligible for school transport at the end of 1994. It is not open to my Department to restore the service in question.

My Department is required to ensure that the school transport scheme is operated in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible.
