Question:

54 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry in view of the extensive imports of nursery stock, the proposals, if any, he has to increase home production. [1302/95]

Nursery stock production has increased substantially over the past ten years to meet the growing home demand and export opportunities. The Government will continue to support this sector with national and European Union assistance, within the constraints permitted by the common organisation of the market.

The sector has been grant aided under the Farm Improvement Programme, greenhouse grants scheme (1989-1994) and the Operational Programme for Rural Development (1991-1993).It also qualifies for assistance under the current Operational Programme for Agriculture, rural development and forestry and the producer group scheme. The promotion of nursery stock is carried out by An Bord Glas and Teagasc provide appropriate research and advisory services.
