Vol. 449 No. 3

Written Answers. - In-Patient Beds for Drug Users.

Pat Upton

Question:

60 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health the number of hospital beds which are available for the treatment of drug addicts in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3530/95]

Limerick East): I presume that the Deputy is referring to in-patient beds for the detoxification of drug misusers. There are ten such beds available in Beaumont Hospital. Because of pressure on the beds, a waiting list has developed. Funding has, therefore, been made available by my Department to allow the Eastern Health Board to provide ten additional detoxification beds at Cherry Orchard Hospital. These beds are being commissioned by the board at present and it is hoped to have them available by the end of April.
