Vol. 449 No. 4

Written Answers - Censorship of Publications Board.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

125 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the criteria on which membership of the Censorship of Publications Board is determined; the number of times on average the Board has met during the past five years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3641/95]

The appointment of the Censorship of Publications Board is provided for in the Censorship of Publications Act, 1946. Section 2 of this Act provides for the appointment by the Minister for Justice of a Censorship of Publications Board consisting of five persons. No specific criteria for the selection of members is provided for in the Act but it has been customary to appoint a member of the Judiciary as chairperson. The Censorship of Publications Board has met on average five times per year over the five year period 1990-94.
