Vol. 449 No. 8

Written Answers. - Gender Realignment.

Brendan McGahon

Question:

26 Mr. McGahon asked the Minister for Health if the facility of gender realignment is available on the medical card; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4377/95]

Limerick East): The position is that gender realignment, which is a specialised form of treatment, is not available in this country. However, health boards may refer abroad patients, including medical card holders, for gender realignment surgery, where this treatment has been deemed clinically necessary by their consultants.
