Vol. 450 No. 3

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 30 on two different topics. I propose to deal with these two topics separately and I will call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic. I received notice from Deputy Liam Lawlor and I call on him to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

Níl sé anseo.

It cannot be very urgent.

In regard to the second topic, I received notices from Deputies Ellis and Dempsey. I call first on Deputy Ellis to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the reduction of £330,000 in the allocation for non-national roads in County Leitrim and a reduction of £150,000 under the same heading for County Sligo.

I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss a matter of urgent public importance, namely, the failure of the Government to recognise the very serious damage being done to local economies by the deterioration of county roads as evidenced by the reduction in moneys allocated for non-national roads by the Minister for the Environment.

Having considered the matters fully I do not consider them to be contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motions. The matters referred to by Deputies Dempsey and Ellis are ongoing and will arise under Oral Questions No. 36 and many written questions to the Minister for the Environment today.

It is unlikely that we will reach Question No. 36 today, and the announcement was made yesterday.

Members should not invoke Standing Order 30 lightly. They should be careful not to abuse the privileges of this House by raising matters under Standing Order 30 which clearly can be raised in so many other ways——

You would want to travel some of these roads, a Cheann Comhairle.

——and are being dealt with at present under the procedures of the House.

The procedures are inadequate.

Deputies who request leave to move motions should at least be present in the House.
