Vol. 450 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Road Network.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

64 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the deficiency in the national road network with no major road from north-east to north-west; if he will upgrade the road from Dundalk, County Louth to Sligo, in view of the commitment by the Government, the EU, the United States and contributors to the International Fund for Ireland to economic development in the Border region. [5042/95]

A lengthy and comprehensive review of the national road system was brought to a conclusion with the making of the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1994 on 14 July 1994. The traffic requirements of Border areas were among a wide range of issues considered during that review. I do not therefore propose to make any major changes in the national road network in the immediate future. Traffic patterns in Border areas will continue to be monitored so as to identify any long term changes, arising from the cease-fires and the reopening of cross-Border roads, which might have implications for the classification system.
