Written Answers. - EU Water Quality Directives.

Question:

68 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment if he has been requested by the European Commission to respond to complaints regarding the violation of the EU Water Quality Directives in Loughs Mask, Carra and Conn; the Government's response; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5020/95]

The European Commission wrote to the Irish authorities on 25 January 1995 on foot of a registered complaint concerning implementation of EU water legislation in relation to Loughs Carra, Mask and Corrib in Counties Galway and Mayo. A reply is currently being prepared.

A reply issued to the Commission on 25 November 1994 with regard to a previous complaint about eutrophication in Lough Conn. This reply was subsequently the subject of a further specific Commission query which will be answered shortly.
