Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Interrogation of Person.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

54 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has received an explanation from the British Home Office on the interrogation of a person (details supplied) on the IRA break-out from Whitemoor Prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5449/95]

I can confirm to the Deputy that the Irish Embassy in London has raised the incident concerning the questioning of this particular person with the British authorities. I was understandably concerned at allegations that this individual had been treated in an unacceptable fashion, and instructed that an explanation should be sought from the British authorities on the matter.

I am informed that, following our representations, an investigation of the case is now under way. The Irish Embassy in London will continue to monitor developments closely to ensure that our concerns on this matter are appropriately addressed.
