Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cork Educational Facilities.

Peter Barry

Question:

138 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the number of educational facilities being built or planned for Cork city and county; in view of the damage caused by vandals in recent years to schools, if new protective safeguards are now being incorporated into new architectural designs for all school and college buildings; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5907/95]

There are currently five schools under construction and seven projects at planning stage for Cork city and county.

In order to reduce vandalism, all new post-primary schools are fitted with intruder alarms. Security fencing is provided in high risk areas and security lighting may be provided in exceptional circumstances.

In regard to primary schools, similar protective measures are provided for in the design of new schools in high risk areas.
