Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cork City Gaelcholáiste.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

152 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she intends to provide funding for the provision of a Gaelcholáiste in Cork city in 1995. [6112/95]

In 1993, my Department approved a proposal made by City of Cork Vocational Education Committee for the establishment under its aegis of an all-Irish post-primary school to cater for pupils from the all-Irish primary schools in the southside of Cork city. Accordingly, Gaelcholáiste Deisceart Chorcaí opened on 1 September 1993. The school is currently located in a temporary premises in the centre of the city.

In accordance with standard practice the recognition of the school was given on a trial basis for a period of six years. The question of securing suitable temporary accommodation for the school during this period is primarily for the committee.

My Department is considering a submission recently received from the committee regarding a suitable location for the school and will be in contact with the chief executive officer in the matter shortly.
The provision of funding for permanent accommodation for the Gaelcholáiste would not arise in 1995. A request from the vocational education committee for funding to provide temporary accommodation or to rent temporary premises would receive careful and sympathetic consideration.
