Vol. 451 No. 1

Written Answers. - HIV/AIDS Patients.

Ivor Callely

Question:

32 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he intends to further improve the services and benefits to accommodate the special needs of persons with HIV/AIDS; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6221/95]

Limerick-East): My Department's policy in the area of HIV/AIDS is based on the recommendations of the National AIDS Strategy Committee.

The policies on HIV/AIDS and drug misuse are closely interlinked given that 57 per cent of all HIV positive cases are intravenous drug-use related. Since 1992 substantial funding has been allocated to these areas, particularly in the greater Dublin area where the majority of drug misusers reside. I have allocated additional funding of £1.627 million this year to allow for (1) the establishment of additional community drug teams and additional satellite clinics in the Dublin area, (2) the development of detoxification and rehabilitation services for drug users, and (3) the development of palliative care services in Cork. In addition, funding to a large number of voluntary organisations is being continued.

I will continue to ensure that services for persons affected by HIV/AIDS are provided as necessary.
