Vol. 451 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Recipients.

Ivor Callely

Question:

49 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number and percentage of all social welfare recipients with an address in or who lived in the Dublin area in 1994; and the comparative figures for 1993. [6219/95]

At 31 December 1994 there were an estimated total of 822,500 recipients of a weekly social welfare payment. Approximately 237,000 (29 per cent) were resident in Dublin City and County. (Data for those in receipt of an unemployment payment are compiled by reference to the location of the Social Welfare local office rather than the area of residence.)

In addition child benefit was paid to 482,592 families in respect of 1,055,156 children nationally of which 140,486 (29 per cent) families were resident in Dublin.

The total at 31 December 1993 was 832,822, of which approximately 234,500 (28 per cent) were resident in Dublin City and County. There were a total of 482,300 families in respect of 1,074,735 children in receipt of child benefit in 1993 of which 140,344 (29 per cent) families were resident in Dublin.
The numbers relating to 1994 are provisional and include some estimates as final data are not yet available. Final figures relating to all social welfare schemes will be published in the annual "Statistical Information on Social Welfare Services" report which will be available later in the year.
