Pat Upton

Question:

34 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to introduce further controls on the availability and use of pesticides; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6283/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 34 together.

I am aware of the newspaper article referred to. Extensive data bases available for the two particular pesticides mentioned in the article have been evaluated by the relevant European and WHO scientific bodies which concluded that, when used as recommended, neither pesticide poses a carcinogenic risk for humans. Furthermore, the article admits that there are weaknesses in the report particularly as regards methodology and evidence. I am nevertheless arranging that the text of the original paper is studied here to see whether it requires any action.
Legislation and evaluative structures for all pesticides used on the Irish market are already in place under EU and national legislation. The monitoring system on new developments or scientific information is continuous to ensure that there are adequate safeguards for human health.
Legislation is being prepared to give implementing effect to further rules which the EU recently decided should apply to trade in certain pesticides which are designated as dangerous chemicals under Council Regulation 2455/92 and Commission Regulation 4111/94.
