Vol. 451 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Free Allowance Entitlement.

Michael Creed

Question:

49 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Finance the increase in tax-free allowances to which a single person is entitled for 1995-96; and the tax-free allowance entitlements of a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [6363/95]

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the changes are as follows: single person's allowance — an increase of £150; PRSI allowance — a decrease of £146.

In this particular case, the taxpayer's allowances for the tax years 1994-95 and 1995-96 compare as follows:

Tax Year

1994/95

1995/96

£

£

Single Person Allowance

2,350

2,500

PAYE Allowance

800

800

PRSI Allowance

286

140

Expenses

Total

3,456

3,460

The reduction in the PRSI allowance is offset by the special £50 per week PRSI allowance introduced in the budget which for full rate PRSI payers is worth up to £143 per annum.
