Vol. 451 No. 4

Written Answers. - National School Staffing.

Michael McDowell

Question:

62 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to representations made on behalf of a school (details supplied) for the retention of existing teacher numbers in spite of the difficulty in enrolments; in view of the caring and inclusive quality of the school's enrolment policy, if she will ensure that there will be no reduction in teacher numbers in the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6661/95]

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment on 30 September of the previous school year. The enrolment of the school in question on 30 September 1993 was 292 which warrants a teaching staff of principal plus nine assistants for the current school year. The enrolment as of 30 September 1994 was 260 which will warrant a staff of principal plus eight assistants for the 1995-96 school year.

The school also has a concessionary post, as well as the services of a remedial teacher and a home-school liaison post. This gives it a very favourable staffing ratio compared to other schools.
I am aware that representations have been made on behalf of the school for the retention of nine assistant teachers, but I regret it will not be possible to depart from agreed procedures in this case. The name of the teacher in question has been placed on the panel for redeployment for the 1995-96 school year.
