Vol. 451 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 30 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with the topics separately and will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their proposals. In regard to the first topic I received notice from Deputy Dermot Ahern and I call on him to make a statement.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss a matter of urgent public concern, that is the taking over by the State of a High Court action by STAD against BNFL in relation to THORP nuclear plant. Sir, I thank you for allowing me raise it on the Adjournment.

Having considered the matter I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, as the Deputy said, it will be raised on the Adjournment.

I wish to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to enable a matter of urgent public importance to be debated, namely the proposal of the European Commission to impose a fine of £75 million on Ireland in respect of malpractices in the beef industry and the urgent necessity to obtain legal orders to have these penalties paid by those who are responsible for the irregularities and not by the taxpayer.

This matter, having been fully considered is not considered to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
