48 Mr. Deasy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will promote cultural links between the south-east of Ireland and Newfoundland. [4689/95]
I am well aware of the close historic ties between the south east of Ireland — Waterford and Wexford in particular — and Newfoundland due largely to the pattern of past emigration from those counties.
Recognising the importance of these ties of kinship the Cultural Relations Committee of my Department, over the years, has recommended financial support for cultural exchanges and other activities with Newfoundland. In addition, our ambassador to Canada regularly visits Newfoundland to support and promote Irish interests, including our cultural interests, there.
