Vol. 451 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Wheelchair Association Driving School.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

99 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform his views on the imminent closure of the Irish Wheelchair Association Driving School; if he will confirm that a single Government Department will fund the service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6741/95]

The Irish Wheelchair Association has been in contact with me about the difficulties it is experiencing in funding its driving assessment and instruction course at its headquarters in Clontarf. In that connection, the Minister for Health has already indicated in the Adjournment Debate on this issue on 9 February 1995 that the Government is anxious that this service should continue to be provided.

I do not have any funds at my disposal to assist the Irish Wheelchair Association.
Public funding for the association, including the driving assessment and instruction course, is provided by the health boards. I understand that representatives of the association recently met the Minister for Health to explore the possibility of further funding.
In the circumstances, the Deputy may wish to inquire from my colleague, the Minister for Health, about latest developments.
