My Department is not in a position to sanction such appointments.
The Department's main instrument for combating adult literacy problems is its adult literacy and community education schemes (ALCES). Each vocational education committee is allocated funding annually under this scheme for literacy and community education work with literacy as a priority. Each vocational education committee makes its own arrangements for organising literacy work within the funding provided and having regard to the circumstances in its area.
