Question:

122 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education if she will approve the request from a school (details supplied) in Waterford to be included in the scheme of assistance for schools in designated areas of disadvantage; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6903/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 119, 121 and 122 together. Scoil Lorcán boys' national school shares a remedial post with another national school. The authorities of Scoil Lorcán boys' national school have applied to my Department to have the post allocated to their school on a full-time basis.

This matter is currently being investigated by my Department's primary inspectorate and I will inform the Deputy of the outcome as soon as the investigations have been completed.

I am aware that Scoil Lorcán boys' national school has applied for inclusion in the disadvantaged areas scheme.

I have commissioned the Combat Poverty Agency to conduct a detailed study of current approaches to the identification and support of pupils in disadvantaged areas.

I expect to receive a report on the outcome of this study by the middle of this year and this will provide a basis for development of future approaches in this area.

The needs of Scoil Lorcán boys' national school will be considered in the context of any expansion of the disadvantaged areas scheme which may be undertaken.
