Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 5 Apr 1995

Vol. 451 No. 6

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Mary O'Rourke. I now call on Deputy O'Rourke to state the matter of which she has given notice to me.

I request leave to adjourn the Dáil under Standing Order 30 for the purpose of discussing an issue of great importance, namely, the need for the Government to accept the proposal it has received to give designated status to a part of Athlone wherein is based the Silverlea Plant. This bestowal of designated status, if urgently executed, will initiate a major developmental process which will not alone help to maintain the 170 jobs there but will have the potential to create more jobs. I understand that a Deputy of the Minister's party has initiated a major debate with the Labour Party on this matter.

The Deputy may not now elaborate on the notice she conveyed to me. Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
