Vol. 451 No. 6

Written Answers. - Financing Business.

Pat Upton

Question:

54 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to encourage the banks to take a more strategic and long term approach to financing business. [6764/95]

While this is an issue which is primarily the concern of my colleague, the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, I can assure the Deputy that I take every opportunity available to me to encourage the banks to take a strategic and long term approach to financing business. In this regard, I am most anxious to promote the development of the concept of mutually beneficial partnership banking.

The Deputy will also be aware that in my recent budget speech I indicated that I had secured a commitment from the banks to develop and enhance their support for small and medium sized business, and this is something which will be further pursued.
