Vol. 451 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medical Practitioners Bill.

Robert Molloy

Question:

37 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to introduce a medical practitioners Bill to amend or replace the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7062/95]

Limerick East): It is my intention to introduce a medical practitioners Bill to amend the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978.

The Department has received proposals from the previous Medical Council and other interested parties for amendment of the Medical Practitioners Act and I will be meeting the current Medical Council soon to discuss its proposals.

Seventeen years of practical application of the current Act has shown that there are a number of its provisions which need streamlining and up-dating at this stage. In particular, the parts of the Act relating to fitness to practice and registration require revision.
