Vol. 452 No. 1

Criminal Law (Bail) Bill, 1995: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to regulate the law regarding the admission of an accused person to bail and to provide for the duties and responsibilities of bailspersons.

There would have been no need for me to move this Bill were it not for the fact that the Government has stated it will not publish a Bill in the criminal law area in this session and that we would have to wait until the winter to deal with escalating crime levels.

Is the Bill opposed?

Question put and agreed to.

Second Stage will be taken in Private Members' time.
