Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Carndonagh (Donegal) Sewerage Scheme.

Neil T.C. Blaney

Question:

34 Mr. Blaney asked the Minister for the Environment the reason Carndonagh sewerage scheme, County Donegal, has not been included for funding by his Department for the year 1995-96 in view of the fact that new treatment works have been awaiting sanction for over 20 years and the fact that the present scheme was constructed over 50 years ago and is now inadequate for the present, much enlarged, population; and whether he will favourably reconsider his decision in view of the health hazard the present sewerage system has become. [5845/95]

A revised preliminary report for a scheme estimated to cost almost £3 million was submitted to my Department in December 1993. My Department has asked the county council to reexamine certain aspects of the scheme, taking account of the most recent census data and of the National Sludge Strategy Study which was circulated to local authorities in June 1994. The council's response is awaited.
