Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Accident Statistics.

John Browne

Question:

31 John Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Justice if she has asked the Garda about the background surrounding fatal accidents over Easter, statistics for which make disturbing reading with 13 people killed compared with five killed over the same period in 1994. [8420/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics for the period from midnight on 13 April 1995 to midnight on 17 April 1995 show that a total of 13 persons tragically lost their lives in seven road traffic accidents. Six of these deaths resulted from one horrific accident.

Although statistics for the same period of 1994 show a total of five fatalities in five accidents, the Deputy may wish to note that the total number of deaths on the road during the first three months of 1995 at 80, is down 29 on the same period in 1994. This is due in no small part to the ongoing and rigorous enforcement of the Road Traffic Laws by the Garda.
