Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

48 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has to draw up guidelines for the operation of closed circuit television in public places; whether she intends to publish such guidelines; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8020/95]

I am providing funding this year for the installation of closed circuit television cameras in the Temple Bar area of Dublin city centre as an aid to policing in the area. I am anxious to ensure that the Garda Síochána avails of the most modern technology in its efforts to combat crime. The installation of a closed circuit television system in the Temple Bar area is the first such project to be undertaken by the Garda Síochána and it is hoped that the system will be operational on a pilot basis in that area in the very near future.

The system will be operated in an open and transparent way and will be under the control of the Garda Síochána. A code of practice for its operation is being prepared at present and this will be available to the public.
