Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Gaming Acts.

Robert Molloy

Question:

50 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has to introduce changes under the Gaming Acts in relation to the operation of slot machines; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8481/95]

There is an ongoing review in my Department of the area of law dealing with gaming and lotteries. However, as I said on a number of occasions in the House I could not indicate by way of a reply to a Dáil question, what specific legislative proposals I might have in a particular area. Any proposals I may have will be announced in the normal way in due course.

Enforcement of the provisions of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, is a matter for the Garda Síochána.

Under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, it is a matter for each local authority to adopt by resolution the Part of the Act which permits the licensing of amusement halls in its administrative area (or for a specified part of its area). The local authority may also by resolution rescind such adoption.

The licensing arrangements for an amusement hall also require annual application to the District Court. In hearing applications, the local authority, the Garda Superintendent for the district and any other person who appears to the court to have an interest, may appear and may adduce evidence in the District Court in relation to the application.
