Vol. 453 No. 2

Written Answers. - Treatment of Soldier.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

16 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Defence to consider the treatment meted out to a former soldier (details supplied) following injury while serving with distinction in UNIFIL; and if he will ensure that full and satisfactory discharge papers and health records are restored to this person to help him in his efforts to find paid employment. [9036/95]

The individual in question enlisted in the Permanent Defence Force on 9 January 1986 and was transferred to the Reserve on 22 January 1993. Prior to his transfer to the Reserve he had applied to extend his service in the Permanent Defence Force for a further three years with effect from 9 January 1992. As his military conduct rating was below the standard required under Defence Force Regulations his application could not be approved.

He served overseas with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon from 4 May to 2 October 1988 when he was repatriated on medical grounds. There is no record of his having suffered an injury in Lebanon.

I have been assured by the military authorities that this individual was treated fairly and in accordance with the provisions of Defence Force Regulations at all times and that he received appropriate medical treatment while he was a member of the Permanent Defence Force. His Discharge Papers (LA89) accurately reflect the details of his service in the Defence Forces.
