Vol. 453 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy John O'Donoghue. I now call on Deputy O'Donoghue to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I wish to seek leave to more the Adjournment of the Dáil in accordance with Standing Order 30 to discuss a matter of urgent public importance, that is to afford the Taoiseach the opportunity to outline to the House the reasons he failed to disclose to the Dáil yesterday the material reasons for the delay in dealing with important correspondence relating to the Fr. Brendan Smyth case and why he did not disclose all the facts known to him and, further, whether he disclosed, at the time of the formation of the Government, to his Coalition partners the private understanding he had with the Attorney General relating to future investigations in his office concerning the Fr. Brendan Smyth case.

As the House will be aware this matter is being dealt with today by way of statements. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
