Vol. 453 No. 4

Written Answers. - Balbriggan (Dublin) Status.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

42 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the forms of designated status which he could envisage being appropriate for Balbriggan, in view of his description of the town as being run down during report stage of the Finance Bill; and if the will meet with the local chamber of commerce and town commissioners to consider the fairest and most productive measures to alleviate the hardship of the many unemployed people living there. [9435/95]

As I indicated in the debate on the Committee and Report Stages of the Finance Bill, I do not consider Balbriggan to be a suitable area to be included in the pilot renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts. As regards the inclusion of the town in the urban renewal scheme this is primarily a matter for the Minister for the Environment.

While I do not consider that any useful purpose would be served by meeting with Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and Town Commissioners at this time I would be prepared to look at any submissions which they would wish to forward to me.
