Vol. 453 No. 8

Written Answers. - Payment of Fines.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

57 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of fines paid by enterprises in respect of discharge licence breaches in the most recent year for which figures are available; the average fine paid in that year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9988/95]

The detailed information requested is not available in my Department. Summary statistics regarding prosecutions taken by local authorities in 1993 for breaches of the Water Pollution Acts, 1977 and 1990, were published in Environment Bulletin No. 25; these indicate the range within which relevant fines were imposed. A copy of the bulletin is available in the Oireachtas Library.

No fines were imposed in 1993 in respect of breaches of conditions in licences issued by local authorities under the Air Pollution Act, 1987. Neither have fines up to now been imposed in respect of breaches of new integrated licences issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.
