Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

72 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, he proposes to take to reform the section of that Road Traffic Act which deals with driving licence requirements. [10025/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 68 and 72 together.

The law in relation to driving licences is set out in Part III of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, as amended by subsequent enactments. I have no proposals at this stage to amend these provisions.

Changes to the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1989 to 1994 will be necessary, however, to comply with the requirements of the second EU Directive on driving licences. I propose to make the necessary amending regulations later this year.
