Vol. 454 No. 2

Written Answers. - Juvenile Justice System.

Chris Flood

Question:

17 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, on the proposal that juvenile delinquents could face a curfew at night and that parents would have to put up a good behaviour bond in court to curb troublesome teenagers; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10387/95]

I have indicated in this House in recent weeks that I am preparing new legislation which will repeal the 1908 Children Act and replace it with a comprehensive modern statute which will deal with most aspects of the juvenile justice system.

The Deputy will appreciate that I cannot at this stage be specific as to the Bill's content. However, in the context of the issues raised in the question, I can say that particular attention is being given to providing the courts with a wide range of community based sanctions and measures that they will be able to impose on children found guilty of offences. The role and involvement of the parents of such children is also receiving attention in the preparation of the legislation.
