Vol. 454 No. 2

Written Answers. - Lip-Reading Classes.

Mary Wallace

Question:

53 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the arrangements, if any, she is making to promote the availability of lip-reading classes; if she will set up a training programme for lip-reading teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10457/95]

Lip reading skills are an inherent part of the teaching methodology in use in the schools for the deaf. Lip reading skills are taught to pupils as part of the speech lessons. The special schools for hearing impaired have teachers specialising in this area. Speech therapy sessions are provided for pupils in some of the special classes for hearing impaired children. Teacher skills in facilitating lip reading among pupils is part of the training that teachers of the deaf undergo in the Diploma Course for the Deaf.
