Vol. 454 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Compensation and Legal Cost Payments.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

65 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the breakdown of the total amounts paid in each of the years 1989 to 1994 under the Garda Síochána Compensation Acts as between compensation and legal costs. [10441/95]

Until 1994 expenditure on the Garda Síochána (Compensation) Acts, 1941 and 1945, was not recorded in such a way as to make a distinction between legal costs and awards. The information requested by the Deputy is, therefore, not readily available and could not be obtained without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time.

A breakdown of expenditure is, therefore available only in respect of 1994, as follows:

Awards

£2,846,241.00

Costs

£635,389.00

Total

£3,481,630.00
