Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Naval Service Personnel.

Liam Burke

Question:

181 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Defence the stage of the integration programme of our naval personnel, both on land and at sea; if his Department is proceeding with a gender balance programme; if so, when it will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10509/95]

The 1994 competition for cadetships in the Naval Service was open to women for the first time and, although three places were reserved specifically for women, unfortunately there were no females among the successful candidates. This year's competition for Naval Service cadetships which was advertised recently is open to males and females on an equal basis. The induction of female cadets is the first stage of a planned programme to open all appointments in the Naval Service to females.
