Vol. 454 No. 5

Written Answers. - Examination Superintendent Remuneration.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

47 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in making payment in respect of departmental examination supervision in June 1990 to a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary; the reason correspondence from this person was ignored; when payment owed to her will be made; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11101/95]

The superintendent in question was employed by my Department, and paid for her services, in 1990. She claimed payment of overnight subsistence allowances on the ground that her residence was more than 15 miles from her examination centre and that, as required by my Department in such circumstances, she had stayed at a temporary residence within two miles of the centre. Inquiries made by my Department through the local postal authorities indicated that the superintendent's home was less than 15 miles from the centre and the claim for overnight allowances was refused on this basis. Instead, the superintendent was paid mileage rates on the basis of travelling from her home to the centre each day.

The superintendent did not raise this matter again until 1995. My Department is now satisfied, following the receipt of further information, including a certificate from the local Garda authorities dated June 1995, that her home is in fact located more than 15 miles from the examination centre to which she was assigned in 1990. Arrangements are now being made to pay the balance of remuneration due to the superintendent.
