Vol. 454 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ministerial Visit to Egypt.

Robert Molloy

Question:

78 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to visit Egypt in view of the recent talks between the Tánaiste and the Egyptian Government on the question of live cattle shipments to Egypt; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11248/95]

I am aware of the concerns expressed by Egypt about the suspension of exports of live cattle beyond the Mediterranean, following a review of the welfare aspects of trade to North Africa and the Middle East. My paramount concern is to ensure the welfare of the animals being shipped long distances in a climate to which they are not accustomed. I have recently agreed to two trial shipments to Saudi Arabia which will, it is hoped, give valuable information on the acceptability of the trade. In the circumstances, I do not see the need for a visit to Egypt.
