Vol. 454 No. 6

Written Answers. - Marriage Registration.

Tony Gregory

Question:

109 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health if the marriage of persons (details supplied) is registered with the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths; and, if not, if it is recognised by this State as a valid marriage. [11428/95]

Limerick East): The administration of the system for the registration of marriages is statutorily a matter for An tArd-Chláraitheoir — Registrar-General — of marriages and for local registrars who operate under his general direction.

An tArd-Chláraitheoir has advised that the marriage in question has not been registered. The marriage in question is not registrable under the Registration of Marriages (Ireland) Act 1863 which provides for the registration of Roman Catholic marriages, nor is it registrable under any of the provisions for the registration of marriages other than Roman Catholic marriages. While registration in the various marriage registers is restricted to marriages which may be lawfully solemnised in Ireland, the absence of registration does not necessarily imply that a particular marriage is invalid.
