Vol. 454 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Housing.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

11 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Defence the number and proportion of Defence Forces housing which have been sold to members of the Defence Forces; if he has satisfied himself with the operation of the tender system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11517/95]

A total of 195 married quarters have been sold by the Department of Defence to members of the Defence Forces since 1988. Included in these are 186 other ranks' married quarters located outside barracks sold to the occupants under the terms of a departmental purchase scheme which was in line with the terms of a local authority tenant purchase scheme. A further two such quarters, which became vacant after the expiry of the scheme, were sold to serving members of the Defence Forces on a competitive tendering basis. In addition, seven officers' married quarters were sold to the occupants at prices advised by the Commissioner of Valuation. The number of quarters sold to date represents 28 per cent approximately of the total stock of married quarters located both outside and within barracks.

I am satisfied that the sale of quarters scheme has operated satisfactorily.

I am required to move on to questions to the Minister for the Marine in one minute so perhaps Deputy Byrne would ask one brief supplementary question.

I thank the Minister for his reply. I not an advertisement has been placed for 24, McKee Park, Blackhorse Avenue. The tendering system seems to be rather strange compared to the traditional form of selling property by auction or some other in-house tenant purchase scheme to members of the Defence Forces. Does the Minister know the selling price of the property in Blackhorse Avenue?

I do not have that information but I will certainly get it for the Deputy.
