Vol. 454 No. 8

Written Answers. - Kerry Piers and Harbours.

John O'Leary

Question:

34 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for the Marine the piers and harbours in south and west Kerry which he plans to repair and improve in 1995 to accommodate increased fish landings. [11462/95]

The repair and maintenance of local authority owned piers and harbours is a matter for the local authority concerned, in this case Kerry Council Council.

The Department has no plans to undertake any new works in County Kerry during 1995. The funding available for the development of harbours in the interest of fisheries is limited to £3.064 million in 1995. This funding is fully used up on undertaking development works at the State owned fishery harbour centres and completing phased development works at a number of other strategic harbours including Union Hall, Kilmore Quay and Burtonport. There is insufficient funding to allow for any other development works this year. The Department is prepared to provide engineering advice and to carry out works on an agency basis if requested to do so by other bodies such as An Roinn Ealaíon, Cultúir agus Gaeltachta. That being said, the Department is also aware of Kerry County Council's development priorities and will give them full consideration in the light of funding available in 1996 and subsequent years.
